Kyoto Travel Guide 2026: Temples, Geisha & Hidden Gems

If Tokyo is Japan's future, Kyoto is its soul. With over 2,000 temples and shrines, traditional tea ceremonies, and geisha performances, Kyoto offers the Japan that most travelers dream about.

The former imperial capital for over 1,000 years was deliberately spared from WWII bombing, preserving its incredible architectural heritage intact. There is simply nowhere else like it on Earth.

1. Fushimi Inari Taisha — 10,000 vermillion torii gates winding up a mountain. Go at dawn to avoid crowds.
2. Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) — Gold-leaf covered temple reflected in a mirror pond.
3. Arashiyama Bamboo Grove — Walk through towering bamboo forests. Best in early morning.
4. Kiyomizu-dera — Wooden temple with a stunning mountain terrace overlooking the city.
5. Ryoan-ji — Famous zen rock garden for contemplation and inner peace.

Gion is the most famous geisha (geiko in Kyoto dialect) district. Walk along Hanamikoji Street in the evening for a chance to spot geiko and maiko (apprentice geisha) heading to engagements.

• Do NOT chase or block geisha for photos — This is their workplace
• Photography is banned on Hanamikoji Street side alleys
• Book a tea ceremony or dinner show for a proper geisha experience

• Nara (35 min by train) — Friendly wild deer and the giant Buddha at Todai-ji
• Osaka (15 min by Shinkansen) — Street food capital. Try takoyaki and okonomiyaki!
• Hiroshima (80 min by Shinkansen) — Peace Memorial and nearby Miyajima Island floating torii

🌸 Spring (Mar-May)	Cherry blossom season! Peak in early April. Book 3+ months ahead.
🌿 Summer (Jun-Aug)	Hot & humid but fewer crowds. Gion Matsuri festival in July is spectacular.
🍁 Autumn (Sep-Nov)	Fall foliage rivals cherry blossoms in beauty. Peak in mid-November.
❄️ Winter (Dec-Feb)	Quiet, atmospheric, cheaper. Snow-dusted temples are magical.
